Throwback Thursday: Masquerade- Vampires and Angels of Death

Don't let the cover fool you.

This is a hardcore romance mixed in with horror as is the whole Soul Reaper Series. If you are interested in reading my upcoming Deathly Encounters Series. Masquerade is where my Angel of Death was born. This series and the characters in it are some of my favorites.

True love has finally come to Brenna in the guise of Cain. Before she can fully realize her affections, her life is shattered by something that steps out of the darkness. This intrusion threatens her growing relationship.

Veronica stumbles into Brenna and her world is thrown upside down. Drawn to a woman she doesn’t know. She sees Brenna’s growing affection for Cain as a hindrance. She tries to warn Brenna that not all is what it seems. However, she doesn’t want to listen and now danger is on their doorstep. Veronica’s ex, Devon, has caught up with her.

Excerpt:

My name is Brenna.

The heaviness of the atmosphere rolled around my tongue, lingering in my nose like a fine vintage of wine. It was a hot, humid day. Clothes stuck to every inch of skin, and a sane person hungered for a shower after the slightest exertion. Traces of spices and sweat clung to the fragrance of the day as exotic food was prepared on every corner. Even a hint of magic wafted on the day’s aroma. Spells had been cast to bar intruders and ignite passionate love affairs.

As these scents carried me into consciousness, a slight breeze blew through the Quarter, pulling the bouquets of the day with it. My nostrils flared at the odor on the back of the wind: the wet, dark, musty smell of death and an oncoming storm. Death was part of the culture here, always lingering like the ghosts in the city. Rain came often, but never lasted more than an hour or so, making this place more like a tropical paradise than a bustling city. Even the downpours couldn’t keep the sightseers from exploring the small shops, as well as admiring the balconied apartments in the Quarter. Many were small oases, housing lush plants, which allowed the inhabitants to escape from the cameras and voyeurs. I inhabited one of these sought-after lodgings, but kept the windows shuttered so the sun couldn’t creep in and disrupt my slumber.

I rose, yawning as the heaviness of sleep had not yet left me. Darkness caressed my naked form while the whirling fan cooled my bare skin. Stretching, I urged my body to rise and face the night. I opened the shutters to see the sun painting hues of purple and pink in the hazy air, signaling the fast approaching blue-greens of twilight. I smiled. This was the scene that had greeted me for years. I flicked on the light. I shielded my eyes from the sudden illumination until my pupils adjusted.

I admired my body in the bureau mirror. The overhead lamp gave my milky skin a jaundiced tint that contrasted against the pink of my nipples. My appearance attracted both sexes; it was something in the pheromones. The sex of my partners didn’t matter. I only wanted the ones who could fulfill my desire.

The jasmine-touched breeze danced through my apartment as the coolness of full night blossomed like a moonflower inside my chest. I stretched, now entirely awake as the sluggishness of the day fell away like a misty shroud. The moon’s silvery light already warmed my skin. Its blaze had replaced the sun in my memories and the power of it ignited my heart, night after glorious night.
Staring at my body a moment longer, I realized tonight was not the night for me to turn into Narcissus and be captured by my own beauty. I had eons for that. My gums ached, and hollowness filled my insides. Tonight I’d dress to kill, so to speak. I donned a black velvet dress, black thigh-high stockings, and black Doc Martens.

My gaze fell on the things I would need to complete my disguise. A contact case and scattered makeup: everything I needed to fit in better. From the lot, my tarot cards called to me. I smiled, wondering what Fate had in store for me tonight. Mentally, I checked my schedule and knew I had no clients to read. No one to tell a husband was cheating, or a sickness was devouring them, or a fortune would be lost in the stock market.

I smirked at the thought of how easily I peered into the minds of my clients, divining their futures and reading their emotions. After one session, they always came back. I had a good reputation, unlike the phony psychics who lined Jackson Square. Hotel managers and local occult shops referred tourists to me. I loved unearthing secrets from my unsuspecting clients.

I studied the cobalt backs, admiring the golden stars. I had owned them for years. My right hand passed over the line of cards, automatically settling on one in the middle and then another at the end. Energy sparked between the cards and my palm. I pulled those two cards to see how the evening would progress and to give me a glimpse into the more distant future. The first card I flipped was the Lovers. It signified I would meet someone to spend eternity within the next couple of nights.

Yeah, right! I giggled, wondering who my next conquest would be.

Excerpt:

Ashling stared at the pale stranger before her. If she hadn’t seen a picture of him, she never would’ve believed that Devlin was standing there. She wouldn’t have committed to meeting him in person unless she had talked to him on the phone first. Before that, there were hundreds of text messages and emails where she had spilled her heart out to this man. He didn’t judge her for the choices she made. Moreover, their long talks had blossomed into a good friendship. Finally, he suggested they should meet.

Half shrouded in shadows, Devlin leaned against the glass of the empty coffee shop. His shoulder-length hair was caught back in a ponytail. The illumination of the lights made his skin even paler than in his snapshot. A strand of hair, escaping the binding of the elastic, played along his high cheekbones in the gentle breeze. He was even more beautiful in real life than staring at his photograph. Ashling had committed his image to memory just in case she woke up and the photo was somehow gone.

She stood on the corner, still in the shadows, feeling the energy of the environment playing on her skin. She drew in the strength of the night, letting it warm her and feed her deep hunger. This man was also a psychic vampire. She licked her lips. Part of her wondered if she blinked would Devlin disappear? My nerves are getting the better of me. Maybe I shouldn’t do this. There were many stories of women meeting strange men from the Internet, and the women were never heard from again. She gripped the sides of her skirt and wiped her sweaty palms on the fabric. She sucked on her tongue ring, pushing it up and down inside her mouth, and clinked it against her teeth. Even her toes shook. This is ridiculous. He won’t hurt me. I’ve been talking to him for over a year now. I know him.

“Yeah, but how much do you know him?” Christa’s voice echoed in her mind.

More than I ever knew you before I told you what I was. And that didn’t stop you from hanging around me. Ashling dismissed her friend’s statement and drew in a breath. She pushed up her glasses. Car headlights blinded her, so she threw up her hand to protect her eyes from the glare and withdrew further into the velvet darkness concealing her even from Devlin’s eyes. Her eyeteeth tingled. A slow burn unwound in the pit of her stomach. This isn’t good. It meant her hunger was unsatisfied. The energy of the night wasn’t helping. Ashling had fed before she came to meet Devlin. Christa had allowed her to draw in some of her energy before she left. Normally, Ashling liked to feed while she was asleep and dreamwalking, but tonight her nerves were burning through the energy. She ran her tongue over her teeth and willed the hunger away. At times like this, when her hunger raged, it seemed she possessed actual fangs.

Smoothing the fabric of her skirt one more time, she stepped into the dim light of the café. Devlin wasn’t there. Somehow he had disappeared in the few seconds she blocked her eyes from the oncoming headlights. She turned and searched Massachusetts Avenue for him. If he was playing with her, there were too many shadows for him to be concealed in. Shit. He must have thought I wasn’t going to show and left. Regret consumed Ashling. Maybe it was all my imagination. Maybe I didn’t really see him.

A deep laugh erupted next to her ear, a velvet purr; she wasn’t sure it was coming from a human throat. Ashling spun around and found Devlin now resting against the telephone pole, gazing straight at her. A wide grin spread on his sensuous lips. The smile made him more breathtaking than the dark brooding photo he had sent her. A ladder of silver hoops hung in both of his ears. His smoky eyes were surrounded by long onyx lashes. A sprinkling of stubble ran along his chin. In the picture, his face was angled down so she hadn’t seen his eyes that closely.

“Devlin?”

“Ashling.”

Her throat went dry while she struggled to find the right words. Here was the guy, her savior sometimes, who had listened to her and helped her through the horrible bouts of hunger she’d had, the depression, and the rejection she’d experienced over the past year. It wasn’t easy being a psychic vampire in the world. Most of the populace thought she was insane for being what she was. When she finally found a small niche to belong to, a whole new world had opened up. She had discovered kindred souls among the online communities. There was always the possibility they were yanking her chain, but she was good at reading people. Just as she’d read Devlin the first time she had gotten a personal IM from him.

* * * *

When Devlin’s instant message box popped up, she was browsing some threads on a message board. She had almost ignored it, but something in the way he phrased his question intrigued her. His icon on the forum was a smiley face. Most of the logos reflected something of their owners’ dark personalities. Hers was a little picture of one of her Living Dead Dolls, Lilith to be exact. The smiley face should’ve turned her off, but staring at the blinking cursor while he waited for a response, Ashling studied his introductory question. It read:

“Are you happy, Ashling?”

Was she happy? What an inane question to ask. Of course she was happy. Her fingers poised on the keyboard of her laptop ready to make some snide reply, but the query echoed through her thoughts. Was she happy? She had a boyfriend. She was keeping the hunger at bay. She had a job she liked. Her roommate was great. There were no problems in her life and the online community was revealing more psychic vampires every day. Even though she was finding them, a small part of her never felt they were completely like her.

So she typed her response. “Most of the time.”

“What about right at this moment? If you could capture it and freeze it, would you be happy?”

“Yes,” she replied, but doubt lingered in her mind.

There was a pause, as if he was laughing. A low chuckle echoed through her darkened bedroom. I’m hearing things. It’s my imagination giving this crazy guy a personality.

“I’m not so sure about that.”

“Why? Can you make me happy?”

“I don’t know. I was only posing the question. I love to make people think.”

Ashling snorted when she read the response. He certainly made her think. “Well, are YOU happy?”

“Of course. I’ve just met you.”

Blood rushed to her cheeks. Why am I blushing? I don’t know this guy from a hole in the wall? He could be a depraved serial killer for all she knew. “Well, that’s nice of you to say, but you don’t know me.”

“But I want to know you.”

“Well, I don’t want to know you.” Ashling closed the lid of her laptop, shutting off the contact with the mysterious IMer. For the rest of the day, their small conversation stuck in her head. Even while she was at work pouring drinks, the band on stage couldn’t pull her mind off the conversation. When she arrived home that night, exhausted, smelling like cheap beer and cigarettes, she opened her laptop. The little white box remained, waiting for her to reply. She shook her head and closed the computer again. If the guy really wanted to talk, then he would have to wait until she had showered and gotten a little shut-eye.

* * * *

“Are you daydreaming?”

Ashling blushed and looked away. She had completely tuned Devlin out. “Sorry.”

“No need to apologize. You’ve always been so down to earth when we talk and not up in the clouds.” Annoyance peppered his voice. Devlin lived a few hundred miles away in New York City, while she was in Boston. They had arranged the meeting a few weeks ago when they both had a few days off, so she didn’t want him to think his trip was a waste of time.

She shook her head. “I’m not, really. I was just thinking about the first time we met. When you IM’ed me and asked me if I was happy.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

He smiled this time, which lit up his dark eyes. Ashling bit her lip harder, tasting blood. Fantasies of her and Devlin threatened to overwhelm her, but she had a boyfriend. She and Evan had dated for three years now. They were good together. He was a normal college student, but underneath his Polos and khakis lived a rocker with some outrageous tattoos. Ashling hadn’t told him about her nature, and he wasn’t pleased when she informed him that Devlin was meeting with her.

“Why don’t we go inside? It’s getting a little chilly out here.”

She nodded and headed toward the café. Ashling reached for the door, but Devlin got it first. Blood seared her cheeks, hurting her face from blushing so hard. She’d had butterflies in her stomach on the subway ride over, but those fluttery little insects had morphed into dive-bombing hawks, churning her stomach. She ducked inside, glad the interior of the café was dim. There were plenty of nooks and crannies where she could hide, especially upstairs. They walked to the counter. She got a hot chocolate with shaved dark chocolate on top of the whipped cream. Devlin ordered peppermint tea. He didn’t seem the type who went with tea. She assumed he was a hardcore kinda guy who drank his coffee black. Devlin followed her up the winding staircase to her favorite spot next to the window. Tonight she paid no mind to the bustling street below because she was too enamored with having Devlin here in the flesh. Part of her yearned to reach out, touch him and fling her body against his to feel if he was solid. Devlin slid into the chair across from her, careful for not even his boot to bump her knee under the small table.

Ashling poked at the dark chocolate slivers with her spoon, not able to meet his eyes yet. She tried to keep her hands steady. What do we talk about? I’ve told him all my secrets. He knows so much about me. Even more than Evan. Devlin could be my best girlfriend. She tried to place her spoon on the rim of the saucer, but it clattered and spattered her with hot chocolate droplets.

“Shit,” she muttered. Her right eye started to twitch. Ashling grabbed a napkin, dabbing at the spots on her cheek and then on the table. Devlin’s fingers landed on the white napkin, pinning it to the wooden surface still leaving centimeters between them.

“Ashling, focus.” His voice was soft yet commanding. She dared a look into his smoldering eyes. They reached into her soul and captured her. She drew in a breath, nearly choking on the air. The heat from his fingers brushed against her flesh and enticed the hunger. The temptation to pierce his aura and drain it slowly, savoring it, pressed on her mind. Her teeth ached again. His gaze held hers, but she regained control and finally looked away.

“Sorry, Devlin. I’m normally not this discombobulated when I meet new people.”

“I don’t bite, Ashling.”

She laughed. “You could if you wanted too.” Devlin also professed to drinking blood on occasion, but mostly he got by on energy the way she did.

Being a Psychic in a (Un)Sensitive World

Hello my name is Crymsyn and I am a psychic.

Phew...boy did that get a load off my chest.

Yes, you read that right. I am a psychic well to define it really, I am a clairvoyant empathic medium. What does all that mean? It means that I see stuff, feel stuff, and can talk to the dead.

Being psychic is not something I talk about very often, but it is what gives me the inspiration for many of my books. They say write what you know, so I do.

I create my characters based on experiences I have based on being Pagan and being a psychic among a few other things. I discovered I had abilities when I was twelve based on a friend of mine giving me her earrings to hold for some band thing at the time and I began telling her about her deceased aunt who I had never met or even knew she had. Of course, if I look back on it now, I realize that I was sensing and seeing things before that, but it was then I realized something was different.

By the age of sixteen, I had lived in three different houses that were haunted one by a little girl who loved to play. One where there were parties in the attic where there was no furniture and no people. An an entity who screamed at me a lot and felt the creepiness of the building. Another was my grandmother's house where something lurked in my closet, but don't they always lurk in the closet. I had a harrowing experience there where something grabbed my feet and something else grabbed my hands and I was being used as tug of war. My take on the whole thing was that something was trying to get me and something was also protecting me because I never felt bad in my grandparents' house except for my room.

And then there was the friend's house I stayed with in high school, but that is another story.

When I was seventeen/eighteen my abilities were going out of control and I found a wonderful mentor who helped me hone my gifts. Two days after I graduated high school I started working for a psychic salon in Boston called the Original Tremont Tearoom and spent five wonderful years there while in college reading there among a wonderful group of people who helped pull a country girl into being a city girl and showing me a whole different way of life. It was a time I will always remember and spawned my Soul Reaper series.

Toward the end, I was losing my voice doing readings because I had to make a life decision, follow my path of writing books or doing readings for a living. I chose writing.

I no longer do readings professionally, and if you comment and ask for one the answer is still no, but once and a bit I will turn up volume and help out some friends if need be. Once I chose writing I turned down the dial on my abilities so that I don't have to listen to the things that constantly nag at me for attention and over time I've learned to ignore them too, but once and a while some stuff slips through the cracks.

It's still difficult for me to be in a room full of large people because of all the noise and I avoid graveyards because I don't need anyone coming home with me.

Putting down psychic as prior job experience has been fun because potential employers think I'm pulling their leg until they check my references, but at this point I'm so entrenched in my current day job I really don't worry about it because it was so long ago, but I always answer employers with a warm smile and a warning I can read your mind so don't piss me off, just kidding of course. I really can't read any one's mind. I'm not that good.

Overall, being psychic is part of who I am and there is nothing I can do to change it even if I try and turn it off.  Besides I garner inspiration from the world around me all the time for my books because of it and give advice to those who need it.

Some folks don't believe it and that's okay. My belief is that everyone is sensitive or psychic. It just all depends on if someone is tuned into it or not. Believe me or don't, that is up to you. But of you ask me for a reading the answer is still no. I'd rather write you into one of my books.

Wouldn't that be more fun than me telling your future?

The Thin Red Line Part 4: Immortal Desire

Part of the vampire’s allure in fiction is immortality: that inability to age. Along with youth, the creature of darkness retains his zest for life and love. He is a creature of desire and wanton cravings. We want him to want us forever. And because he will live forever, we think that he can.

Normal love goes through several stages. According to http://www.ericrobersonmusic.com/2013/02/14/9-stages-of-love-all-couples-go-through/, there are 9: infatuation, understanding differences, disturbance over differences, opinion-making based on knowledge, molding one another into personal ideals, being content, doubt, sexual exploration, and complete trust. These are pretty self-explanatory, and I believe that any long-term relationship that is successful does go through these stages. Looking back in the ten years of my married life, I can remember each one.

There is an argument that most vampiric love in novels stops at stage 6, if it ever gets that far. To be fair, most romances and romantic novels end with a couple marrying or committing in some way, which makes this logical. And the whole point of reading something romantic is to enjoy the romance of it. Who wants to hear the terrible word “doubt” when that tall handsome stranger is whispering that he’ll love you forever? The real question here is the wrong assumption that a vampire’s ability to look the same extends to all facets of his personality, including emotion. He will not change in appearance, not if the legends are true. But inside, the vampire will change with the passage of time. He didn’t always love you, right? So if he can fall in love, he can fall out of love as well. So why wouldn’t a long successful relationship with a vampire lead to all 9 stages of love? My reasoning says it would.

Part of the allure is that we want the vampire to remain just as he is that first moment he loved us; to lock that mindset forever in place and have it remain as unchanging as he is. We want the intensity of infatuation, the adventure of new romance, the life-and-death feeling of living moment-to-moment waiting for the next encounter. We want immortal desire, literally. But the truth is that if we could manage to stay in that exciting, romantic stage by some magic, we will never get beyond to the stage of happiness, or better yet, the stage of complete trust. Is that what we really want…forever?

Taken in the Night is Book #3 of the Promise Me Series.

Blurb: When Theo disappears, Sar is left bereft, the uncertain guardian of Theo’s newly born werecougar daughter, Elle. As months pass, clues emerge about Theo’s disappearance, yet the twisting trail ends repeatedly without answer. In her grief, Sar turns to Danial and hesitantly begins to build a life with him and Elle.

Excerpt: “I should go,” Danial said reluctantly. “It’s late.”

I stopped him, my hand on his arm. “Please, stay with me a little while.”

“Sar—” he began warily.

“Please, Danial. I have to talk to you. Come with me.” I held out my hand.

He sighed, and took my hand. I led him below to the bedroom that had been his not long ago. Danial sat on the edge of the bed with me.

“She understands us,” I said quietly. “I didn’t want to talk in front of her.”

“What is it, Sar?” he said tiredly.

“You remember the Hallows party a year ago?”

“Of course,” Danial said with longing. “I remember being so nervous, worried you wouldn’t show. I remember how you looked in the dress, dancing with me.” He paused. “Why do you bring it up?”

“Because you must be going to have another one soon, unless you’re skipping this year.”

“Yes, in late November,” Danial said edgily. “I closed the business while looking for Theo, and am going to reopen it next year. I need the last months of this year to finish up loose ends of old business.” He sighed. “And I need to hire someone to replace Theo, if such a thing can be done.”

“I want to be there, Danial,” I said. “If you would permit me to come.”

“I had hoped you would be,” Danial said, kissing me gently on the forehead. “I wanted to invite you, but wasn’t sure you’d want to—”

“I know you will invite Samuel,” I said forcefully. “I want to question him about Theo—”

His eyes tinted red immediately. “Sar, that is not what I had in mind. I have already talked to him, and he said he did nothing.”

“I don't believe him, Danial. You weren’t there when he and Theo had words.”

“That doesn’t matter,” he retorted. “He is a Ruler. You cannot question him as if he were a mere human.”

“I certainly can—”

“Sar, I forbid it,” Danial said arrogantly, grabbing hold of me. “And that is the end of it.”

“Who are you to forbid me anything?” I said furiously.

“I’m a man that loves you,” he said furiously back, and kissed me hard, pulling the length of his body against mine as we fell backwards onto the bed.

I struggled, but he kissed me more thoroughly, his lips and body cool against mine. I shuddered in his arms, the feeling of being held and desired making me weak with relief and happiness.

Danial moved, rolling me from my side unto my back, his kisses intensifying. He shifted suddenly, pressing down with his hips. I felt his erection pressing firmly to my belly, and I shuddered, my mouth opening to let out a gasp. He saw the opportunity and took it, sliding his tongue into my mouth to taste me. I trembled, and then kissed him back for all I was worth.

Danial broke the kiss, his black eyes staring at me beneath him as he pulled off his shirt. I arched my back, pulling my sweater off over my head. All I’d needed to do was kiss him, and I wanted him so badly I could taste it.

Coming Soon: Falling - Soul Reaper Series

Hey everyone, Falling is going to be re-released on Wend with Purple Sword. Check out this sneak peak of what is to come.

BLURB:

Brenna thought being a vampire was difficult, but becoming an angel is even harder. Her desires run hot and cold. Everything she knows is falling down around her while she yearns for her soul mate.

Azrael forces himself to dismiss Brenna's forlorn cries. To go to her would ignite an angelic war. To make matters worse, a dark force is rising from the bowels hell and the devil has his eye on one thing. Ruling over everything and creating a paradise for his demons.

In order to learn her new powers and save the world, Brenna must travel to the outer reaches of the galaxy and confront her inner demons. Will the world be saved? Will Brenna face the darkest evil of all? Or will the whole of humanity be damned for all time?

Excerpt:
I emerged from the shadows and found Zhen feeding on a mortal she’d tied next to her bed. She sucked greedily on his neck, but he was lost in the haze of her mind. The sight held me transfixed for a second. Then I turned away, waiting for her to finish before the sight roused my buried desires.

“You took your time getting here.” She wiped her mouth. “I didn’t think you’d come. You never did when I needed you.”

The contempt in her voice was harsh. She still resented me for abandoning her ages ago.

“Why did you summon me?”

She stepped close and stared into my eyes. I tried to find some of the human girl I’d helped still inside her, but none remained. Centuries had transformed her into the hardened thing she was. Zhen motioned me over to a torn-up couch, where an old quilt was thrown haphazardly over the seat. Anger burned in me. The wound in my hand began to sleep. Even Michael’s wound on my cheek throbbed from my body repairing the damage.

“An old quilt? Sharika?”

“No, Azrael.” Sharika moved a portion of the blanket back and revealed a wizened and yellowed corpse. Its teeth stood out against thin, drawn lips. The skin was dry and sunk to the bone. The muscle and tissue had slowly begun to decompose. Wisps of hair clung to the head. It reminded me of a thousand-year-old mummy.

“It’s a corpse. Is its soul trapped? I don’t feel one. What’s the fuss?”

Sharika traced her finger over the corpse’s face. Her expression betrayed a deep sense of loss. Tears laced her eyes when she met my gaze. “Master.” She hadn’t called me that in eons. Whoever this corpse was, it meant something important to her.

I wiped a tear from her cheek and wrapped my wing around her for comfort. It helped a little. I checked back on the corpse and caught the faint movement of its eyelids. The mummy was still alive. The more I stared, the more its features came to life in my mind. I ran my hand over the body, settling above its—her—heart. Her aura, the energy field that kept her body going, had dwindled down to nothing. I could barely feel Brenna’s soul. It was as if she’d taken herself out of existence.

“How?”

Zhen shook her head. “She’s been calling for you. She thought you abandoned her. When you didn’t answer, her grief ate away at her soul. Last week, she came to me and asked me about going to ground. She practically shut down here. I found her two days ago in a field. I’ve never known the effects of hibernation to be this bad. Not even after my thousand-year sleep. My blood didn’t rouse her. She needs you, Azrael.

“I know why you keep her away,” Zhen continued, “but she’s so fragile, still so human. After all she’s been through and what she’s becoming, you discarded her. After you turned me, at least I had an idea of what I could do. You have to help her.”

“Tell your nest to leave. All of them. I can’t have them pressing on my consciousness.”

She didn’t say anything, but I felt her mental command echo through the walls. Zhen would do as I ordered in this case. I was still her Master, even though that part of me had been pushed behind walls long ago.

I peeled the quilt back slowly and examined Brenna more carefully.I damned myself for not answering Brenna, for turning her away. I placed my hand on her chest and closed my eyes, trying to find the void where she’d sent herself. I sensed a faint trace of her, far away in a dark emptiness. Nothing existed there. I wound my power around her and began to pull her back. But each time I grew close to her, she’d pull away again, drifting back to oblivion.

I tried several times and finally gave up.

I knelt next to Brenna and watched her body slowly disintegrating. Never before had I seen a hibernating vampire in this condition. My love was dying and avoiding my reach. I was Death, but somehow she’d accessed her powers and drifted away from me. Zhen was correct. Brenna was more human than I’d ever imagined. On the verge of losing her, I realized what the Source had meant when she’d said my emotions could justify a war. I loved Brenna. It was that simple. I needed her for balance to help remember what I had been.

All vampires were hungry when they woke from hibernation. I bit into my wrist and had to force Brenna’s mouth open, since it was locked shut. I held the wound over her lips so blood slid down her throat. For a long time, nothing changed. My incision kept healing over. I reopened the wound six times, always going deeper to get more blood. The loss of fluid didn’t bother me. At last, I saw an inkling of her throat swallowing. I heard the creak and crack of bone moving. Mummified hands wrapped around my wrist with a strength I hadn’t expected. Razor nails enclosed my flesh and sliced the veins. A paper-thin tongue lapped at the wound. It kept going, and there was no sign of Brenna.

The sucking stopped. Brenna’s hand released mine. She had drained me dry. My hunger burned in me, fiercer then I remembered. My teeth slipped out of my gums, and I smelled the human next to Zhen’s bed. I wanted to break Brenna’s hold and go feed from him, but if I did so, I would snap her flesh. She was almost restored; yet her soul still lingered outside of my grasp. I stared at the human. He would ease my pain, but I bit down and forced the vampire in me back. I was an angel. I didn’t need blood, didn’t need to kill. I kept repeating that truth, and it seemed to help. My hunger receded to a dull ache. My teeth retracted, and I was all right again. Then Brenna moved.

Hope you liked this look into Falling. The Apocalypse is coming and Azrael and Brenna must come together once and for all to beat back the Devil and hopefully accept the love they have for one another.

Christa has been taking photos for years, and she’s finally gotten her big break. However, everyone wants a piece of her including Bastian, her ex-boyfriend. One night while she’s walking home, she’s attacked and her savior is a hunk of a man. The only problem is, she really isn’t looking for a relationship.

Ethan saves Christa and can’t get her out of his mind. He’ll do anything to save her even if it means making her like him. Will he keep her safe from Bastian? Or will Christa find herself captured?

Excerpt:

I opened my eyes, got up, and walked over to the photograph. It was one of my favorites. All you saw was half of my face reflected in the mirror, my arms covered my tits, as well as my nude back with the tattooed wings that I had for years. It was black and white and reminded me of something out of a gothic novel. The look on my face was forlorn. I didn’t remember what I’d been thinking, but that time in my life I had no one to turn to. My father had just remarried, and I wanted warm arms to surround me. Even now that would be a welcome distraction. Bastian was toast, and it would be good to have someone in my life that didn’t want me just for money.

“The model is beautiful.”

I froze, hearing the velvet voice behind me. It was the same guy who tried to pick me up outside. Great. Just great. “Thanks.” I turned slowly and to find the same guy who had rescued me the other night. My mouth dropped. Oh shit! I was flabbergasted.

He smiled. I glimpsed something in his eyes that was almost like longing while he took in the photo. “You’re most welcome.”

“Look about outside. I didn’t know it was you.”

“Don’t worry about it. You looked like you needed another hand. That’s all.”

“Thank you. I appreciate the thought. Ethan, right? I think the gallery’s closed for the night. If you’re interested in my work, maybe we can set up a meeting or something.”

He smiled smugly. His hair was more silver than blond, and he had paler skin than I thought. He was wearing dark slacks and a red silk shirt. His eyes were glacier blue. This would be the guy to throw down on the floor and have a good time with. I can ride him silly. Those calves and those arms would sure give me a work out. He’d tell me he loved to be ridden and then he would take me all night long. Blood rose to my cheeks as I thought about him on top of me, my fingers running over his smooth chest. I’d mess up that perfect hair, and he’d want me to call out his name. He’d make me feel so damn good.

“Hey, Ethan. How’s it going, sweetie?” Millicent purred behind me, bringing me out of my lustful thoughts.

“Hello, Millicent. The show was a complete success. The only print that didn’t go was this lovely one, but I think the artist is more beautiful in person.”

“Didn’t I tell you, girl. She didn’t believe me. You’re gonna be a star with all the business you got tonight. I got numbers for potential clients that want to look at the rest of your portfolio. Thanks for letting us use the space, Ethan. You’re the hottest thing in town right now.”

“It’s not a problem. I was in-between shows, and you’ve done me plenty of favors in the past. It was the least I could do. I was hoping that I could buy this copy for myself. If that’s okay?”

Millicent cracked a smile, and I only stared at the two of them. “Back it up a sec. Y-you own this place?” I stammered.

Ethan nodded.

“Hey, I’m sorry about the other night. It was late, and I just wanted to get home. Thanks again for getting that dickhead off me.”

“It wasn’t a problem. I’m always glad to help a woman in need.”

“You guys know each other?” Millicent asked.

“We met the other night when she was in need of assistance.”

“Shit, girlfriend why didn’t you tell me you knew E.”

“Millicent, I really don’t know him. He saved me after this gansta wannbe-asshole jumped me.”

“My, my, a match made in heaven,” Millie purred.

“Shut up, bitch.” I growled.

“Mmm-hmm."

Ethan smiled at the exchange as Millicent put her hand on her hip, giving me the best drag pose he could muster.

“Thanks for the gallery and all. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. You can have the picture for everything you’ve done.”

“You’re gift is well received. Thank you. Now, ladies, I think we should call it a night.”
