Guest Post: Web of Memory Excerpt by Tara Fox Hall

Hello Everyone,

Let's please welcome Tara Fox Hall today to the blog. She is sharing an Except from her book Web of Memory. She is also having a giveaway so make sure you check out the whole post for some tantalizing prizes.

 BLURB:

Sarelle’s return to her loved ones brings a brief measure of solace, even as she mourns all that changed in her absence. Rene’s presence and Sar’s pact with Shaker add as much tension as comfort, as the delicate balance of Sar’s life threatens to collapse under the weight of all she endured as Michael’s prisoner. Determined to reclaim her life, Sar fights back, inadvertently sparking Danial’s memory as an unseen ancient enemy prepares to strike a fatal blow.

EXCERPT:

I walked through the front door of Hayden the second week of September, a little over twenty-four hours after being liberated from Michael’s fortress. Two seconds later, V grabbed hold of me around my waist, sobbing. I hugged her, dissolving into tears as Elle and T threw their arms around me too. Their love enveloped me, washing away the horror of the last four months of captivity, making it seem like a bad dream. Even my parents were there to hug me, my mom’s eyes bright with unshed tears.
God, it is good to be home.

* * * *
After showering quickly, I went to Lash’s room where Titus had carried his prone body. He had still not responded to the blood infusions Devlin had given him on our trip home. I lay down near him and slept. By morning, he had still not regained consciousness. I squeezed his hand, wanting to shake him but worried I’d somehow make his condition worse.
“Give it time,” Titus rumbled comfortingly as he entered. “His wounds were mortal, Sar. It’s only with luck we saved his life. He’s got a strong will to life, that snake has.”
“And two small incentives,” Devlin added meaningfully from behind him. “He’ll awaken soon.”
He came over to me. “Love, I’ve made you an appointment with Stephen for two days from now to check on your twins. Titus said Lash should wait that long before moving around. I’m betting he’ll want to go with you.”
“Thank you,” I said gratefully.
“I must go over some things with Titus,” Devlin said, giving me a quick kiss. “Please, would you remain here with Lash?”
“Don’t worry,” I said, giving him a weary look. “I’ve no plans to go anywhere without a full platoon with me for quite a while.”
I spent the better part of that day at Lash’s bedside, sometimes dozing, sometimes reading. Everyone stayed away, even my kids. Now they were young adults with their own lives; Elle was just starting a new semester, T had a business to run, and even V had her lessons. That was what I told myself, anyway.
But all this solitude gave me too much time to think on all that had happened. The last five years had been filled with so much heartache along with the happiness of becoming a mother and a partner. Maybe if it hadn’t been multiple times with potential deadly consequences, sigh. My latest disaster, becoming Michael’s prisoner for months as he tried to force me to have his child had been terrible. Almost losing Lash had been horrific, both to his degeneration and then when he had taken a sorcerer’s killing blow meant for me. But I was home now and everything would go back to normal. Or what had passed for normal for me for the last few years: being Oathedread, partneredto Devlin, the blond vampire golden-eyed who Ruled the North American Continent, and also his co-Ruling brother Danial, who was the matching shadow of Devlin, albeit with dark hair and dark eyes. The comatose weresnake in front of me, Lash, was part of that Oath, as vampire law called it. I was pregnant with his twins, something that had made the captivity bearable, and all of our failed attempts at escape. We made it, we’re free. Thanks to Shaker...
At once I heard the demon’s voice in my head. You called mistress? he said in my mind in teasing tones.
Michael and his sorcerer, Cyrus, had foiled all our escape attempts. It had only been my agreeing to become Shaker’s Mistressread, his human anchor in the mortal world, to keep him out of Hellthat had let Devlin and his own demon, Titus, find Lash and I in the nick of time. The ramifications of my Hellish pact were sure to cause ripples in my life, something I hadn’t had time to think about until now. But what choice did I have? None.
Mistress, Shaker said again in my mind.
I’m okay, I thought back to him. Just thinking. If the touch of my hands would help you to ponder the benefits of our alliance...
No! I interrupted, blushing. Leave me. As you wish. I breathed a sigh of relief, then told myself not to think about any of it. There would be time enough for that in the days ahead. You dealt with everything you went through so far okay. You can deal with this too, you just have to be strong.

Guest Post: Tara Fox Hall - Tempest of Vengeanace

Blurb:

A chain of tragic events cumulating in the shattering of the magical "dream bond" between Theo and Sar turns the lovers against one another, as Ulysses attacks from all fronts, hoping to destroy Devlin for good. The return of Lash reignites the fire between he and Sar, even as he saves her daughter Elle from certain death. Finally joined under Oath, Lash, Devlin, and Sar face the storm of Ulysses's wrath, knowing it will take their combined strength and courage to save all they love from his tempest of vengeance.

Excerpt:
My tired eyes shot open in surprise. Lash was also taken aback, studying Devlin as if he was waiting for the vampire to state some kind of condition. Devlin had been holding the edges of the door frame and now he let go of one, and stepped aside. Lash looked past him to me, lying there in Devlin’s bed. It was too dark for me to see what he was feeling by his eyes, and even then, he had become a lot better at hiding his emotions, now that his eyes weren’t always flat.
Lash stepped in the room. Devlin shut the door behind him, then came back, and got into bed. Lash came to the bottom of the bed and stopped, his face still unreadable.
“What are you waiting for? Go shower and get in here already,” Devlin ordered, grief still heavy in his words.
“Dev, why are you saying that this is okay now?” Lash hissed, annoyed.
“Because life is too short,” Dev said flatly. “Danial thought he had eternity. That he was going to see Elle and Theoron grow up. He may never get the chance to now. I may have lost him for good. And now my niece has been hurt badly...” Devlin paused, swallowed hard and began again. “I’ve been the cause of a lot of suffering. And I’m not causing any more, not for you or her, not if I can help it.”
“You’re sure?” Lash hissed in a malicious tone. “Don’t offer me this and then change your mind, Dev, like you have before. It’s yes or no, tonight and from now on. Because if she wants me, I’m not giving her up because you tell me to, not ever again.”
I wanted to say “what about Gina?”, but decided to hold my tongue. I was feeling too happy just knowing he wanted me, that he still cared for me as he had months ago.
“I want you here. She wants you here. Stay.” Devlin said.
6.) I flipped the bacon and the sausage just in time, and told Lash to mix up the pancake batter. He gave me a blank look.
I cracked up laughing, and he laughed too, even though it was at his expense. I got the ingredients in a bowl, and handed it to him, and he mixed. Then we traded again, and I gave him some bacon and sausage to eat.
“Put in the bagels or toast, please,” I said, pouring the pancake batter into the hot frying pans. Lash did it, and then he was easing up behind me again, putting his arms around me.
“You make me so happy, Sar,” he said softly, moving my hair with one hand so he could kiss my neck. “I never thought—”
I heard a low growl, and looked up to see Theo and Terian in the doorway.
Theo’s eyes were yellow, and Terian’s were red, as they beheld Lash and me in our robes, him holding me as I made us breakfast. I could smell the scent of sex on myself, and I knew they could both smell it, too, and also probably that it had been only minutes before they arrived.
“I told you we should have driven here, not teleported right in,” Terian said, rolling his eyes. He didn’t look surprised, likely because I had just asked him for that potion.
Theo seemed unable to take his eyes off Lash and me. I went crimson under his steady gaze and looked down, but Lash just gave them both a wide grinning smile.
“Sorry, we didn’t know we had company,” Lash hissed gleefully, resting his head on my shoulder, holding me as he looked at them. “As you can see, we weren’t expecting any visitors.”

The Thin Red Line Part 4: Immortal Desire

Part of the vampire’s allure in fiction is immortality: that inability to age. Along with youth, the creature of darkness retains his zest for life and love. He is a creature of desire and wanton cravings. We want him to want us forever. And because he will live forever, we think that he can.

Normal love goes through several stages. According to http://www.ericrobersonmusic.com/2013/02/14/9-stages-of-love-all-couples-go-through/, there are 9: infatuation, understanding differences, disturbance over differences, opinion-making based on knowledge, molding one another into personal ideals, being content, doubt, sexual exploration, and complete trust. These are pretty self-explanatory, and I believe that any long-term relationship that is successful does go through these stages. Looking back in the ten years of my married life, I can remember each one.

There is an argument that most vampiric love in novels stops at stage 6, if it ever gets that far. To be fair, most romances and romantic novels end with a couple marrying or committing in some way, which makes this logical. And the whole point of reading something romantic is to enjoy the romance of it. Who wants to hear the terrible word “doubt” when that tall handsome stranger is whispering that he’ll love you forever? The real question here is the wrong assumption that a vampire’s ability to look the same extends to all facets of his personality, including emotion. He will not change in appearance, not if the legends are true. But inside, the vampire will change with the passage of time. He didn’t always love you, right? So if he can fall in love, he can fall out of love as well. So why wouldn’t a long successful relationship with a vampire lead to all 9 stages of love? My reasoning says it would.

Part of the allure is that we want the vampire to remain just as he is that first moment he loved us; to lock that mindset forever in place and have it remain as unchanging as he is. We want the intensity of infatuation, the adventure of new romance, the life-and-death feeling of living moment-to-moment waiting for the next encounter. We want immortal desire, literally. But the truth is that if we could manage to stay in that exciting, romantic stage by some magic, we will never get beyond to the stage of happiness, or better yet, the stage of complete trust. Is that what we really want…forever?

Taken in the Night is Book #3 of the Promise Me Series.

Blurb: When Theo disappears, Sar is left bereft, the uncertain guardian of Theo’s newly born werecougar daughter, Elle. As months pass, clues emerge about Theo’s disappearance, yet the twisting trail ends repeatedly without answer. In her grief, Sar turns to Danial and hesitantly begins to build a life with him and Elle.

Excerpt: “I should go,” Danial said reluctantly. “It’s late.”

I stopped him, my hand on his arm. “Please, stay with me a little while.”

“Sar—” he began warily.

“Please, Danial. I have to talk to you. Come with me.” I held out my hand.

He sighed, and took my hand. I led him below to the bedroom that had been his not long ago. Danial sat on the edge of the bed with me.

“She understands us,” I said quietly. “I didn’t want to talk in front of her.”

“What is it, Sar?” he said tiredly.

“You remember the Hallows party a year ago?”

“Of course,” Danial said with longing. “I remember being so nervous, worried you wouldn’t show. I remember how you looked in the dress, dancing with me.” He paused. “Why do you bring it up?”

“Because you must be going to have another one soon, unless you’re skipping this year.”

“Yes, in late November,” Danial said edgily. “I closed the business while looking for Theo, and am going to reopen it next year. I need the last months of this year to finish up loose ends of old business.” He sighed. “And I need to hire someone to replace Theo, if such a thing can be done.”

“I want to be there, Danial,” I said. “If you would permit me to come.”

“I had hoped you would be,” Danial said, kissing me gently on the forehead. “I wanted to invite you, but wasn’t sure you’d want to—”

“I know you will invite Samuel,” I said forcefully. “I want to question him about Theo—”

His eyes tinted red immediately. “Sar, that is not what I had in mind. I have already talked to him, and he said he did nothing.”

“I don't believe him, Danial. You weren’t there when he and Theo had words.”

“That doesn’t matter,” he retorted. “He is a Ruler. You cannot question him as if he were a mere human.”

“I certainly can—”

“Sar, I forbid it,” Danial said arrogantly, grabbing hold of me. “And that is the end of it.”

“Who are you to forbid me anything?” I said furiously.

“I’m a man that loves you,” he said furiously back, and kissed me hard, pulling the length of his body against mine as we fell backwards onto the bed.

I struggled, but he kissed me more thoroughly, his lips and body cool against mine. I shuddered in his arms, the feeling of being held and desired making me weak with relief and happiness.

Danial moved, rolling me from my side unto my back, his kisses intensifying. He shifted suddenly, pressing down with his hips. I felt his erection pressing firmly to my belly, and I shuddered, my mouth opening to let out a gasp. He saw the opportunity and took it, sliding his tongue into my mouth to taste me. I trembled, and then kissed him back for all I was worth.

Danial broke the kiss, his black eyes staring at me beneath him as he pulled off his shirt. I arched my back, pulling my sweater off over my head. All I’d needed to do was kiss him, and I wanted him so badly I could taste it.
